So life is crazy.
I'm entering the second year of my marriage and the (CENSORED) year of what is turning into a career.
And, as if they will have some sort of meaning beyond whatever fandom is, I'm watching entirely too many sports and dwelling on aesthetic minutiae such as what Toney Douglas do and the tribal loyalties of Charles Barkley.
Meanwhile, I still pay attention to the things I know to have meaning, namely art and politics, yet I'm increasingly frustrated or indifferent to them as I inevitably age.  And all the while, I nourish myself almost daily with the Internet art of the moment, the podcast (most especially the great Marc Maron).
When my friends at AFR invited me to participate in some podcasts as a talker rather than a listener, I was more than excited (especially since my blogging has been less than consistent recently).  But I wanted more.
And so I asked my twin brother, Drew, and my biggest Internet man-crush, Saf, to join me on a transatlantic podcast to talk about our shared interests (even if Drew hasn't been watching as much football as the rest of us fanatics).  Since they are current and/or former graduate students, I thought they would class up the joint a bit.
I wasn't disappointed, even if I initially settled on a generic title that has already been taken, meant to signify the distance over which we Skyped our recording session: Mind The Gap.  And even if my overpowering need to hydrate led me to pour a glass of water directly in front of my microphone as Saf and Drew were speaking.  And even if the sound quality for an inaugural podcast was predictably spotty.  No.  I was, if anything, excited.
And so, if you want to spend some time with us, here is the first episode of The Transatlantic Podcast.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
FOOTBALL
4:30 - 17:00:  "Some people cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar."  In which we discuss whether John Henry will bring success to Liverpool, whether via a new manager or the impeccably named William Beane, and also the twisted genius of Spanish Buddha figure Rafa Benitez.  Oh, and the insufferability of Jamie Redknapp (who's quite attractive, surprisingly).
17:30 - 21:00: Wasn't Nani's goal last weekend bizarre?  And why do football referees get embroiled in controversies like this, to the point where we know their names?  I can only think of a few other sports where this is the case.
21:00 - 26:00: the English press is at it again.  I suppose it's all in the game.
26:00 - 29:30: the Welsh wonder that is Gareth Bale.
POLITICS
30:00 - 35:00: The midterm elections...
35:00 - 36:30: Welfare music.
36:30 - 39:00: Bush's beef with Kanye.  Diss track soon to follow!
CULTURE
39:00 - 42:00: Drew has thoughts about Kanye.
42:00 - 48:00: Saf can't commit to many recording artists but he acknowledges the true nature of the Marmite Morrissey and John Barnes, the wonder of Anfield himself.
48:30 - 51:30: From Barnes' Three Lions to Chris Morris' Four Lions.
(And by the way, Drew's a dick.)
If you can listen to all (or any) of this and have thoughts to share with us, please comment!
